You are NOT better than a janitor
Treating everyone with respect
This issue of the newsletter is to remind everyone to be kind and respectful to everyone you come across.
Just because you are a medical student, a junior doctor or a consultant, it doesn’t give you the right to be rude and disrespectful to others.
It’s honestly not just about being nice when necessary, but also about being nice when unnecessary. It is easy to get lost in your ego when you are a medical student or a doctor because of the title this job holds, but just remember to humble yourself and continue to treat everyone with kindness and respect.
Say Goodmorning to the cleaner when you walk past them. Greet the nurses, offer them coffee. Don’t speak down to the janitors, don’t speak down to the porters.
When I saw the head nurse struggling with taking blood, I put on gloves to offer assistance. When the student nurses were cleaning a patient’s smelly ulcer, I offered help. You build a good rapport with your colleagues which just improves the overall atmosphere of the ward/clinic.
Are the nurses cleaning up a patient that has an ulcer? Are you free and have nowhere to be? Offer your help. They will most likely turn you down anyways but just offer. The more you make the people around you’s life easier, they will then in turn make your life easier too.
As I said, not much to this newsletter other than just a reminder. Take this message as you want. If you have been rude to the staff, change up. If you have been neutral, try and show appreciation, it goes a long way.
