Why I started a part-time job as a medical student
Medical school isn't as time consuming as most people advertise
Is medical school time-consuming? - not really
It goes without saying how difficult medical school can be. It is time-consuming, tiring, draining and can sometimes just be a mess.
I often hear students telling other prospective students about how they have no time to do anything else and that they have no time to chill or do what they enjoy. The same goes for some doctors and honestly, I simply just cannot understand, why they feel the need to LIE to these students?
If you are telling people that all you do is study medicine and you’re not doing anything else in life.. you are LYING. or if you are genuinely only studying 24/7 - then stop? do something else? get a good life balance.. anyways, that’s a whole new topic for another day.
Yes, I agree that there are certain times where being a medical student means your days from morning till night are just medicine (particularly closer to exam time), however, for me, even during exam time - I still find the time to do other things such as play video games, binge watch youtube. This has nothing to do with my amazing time management skills If I may say so, but more to do with the fact that I just do not see the point in studying every single day. The last time I studied a medical topic was 3 days ago before the start of my anaesthesia rotation, and that was to just refresh my memory. Now, don’t get me wrong - I’m not saying I’m a bad student and that I don’t study and that I don’t know my stuff. The knowledge I have accumulated over the years has been enough for me to just require some brushing up every now and then. There are days where I just feel like I need to sit down and revise a topic because I’m either poor at it or it just doesn’t make sense to me.
Anyways, with all that being said, that’s why I could start a youtube channel during medical school - just like the million other medical students who have youtube and Instagram channels/pages. If medicine was SO TIME CONSUMING, where are these people finding the time to do all of this? makes you think hmm?
The main reason
So to get to the main point, I started working as a part-time freelance video editor because I have this drive to just start earning money and living a comfortable life. I want to earn money and have tons of it in my bank account so that I can do whatever I want. I will save etc, but I also want to be able to make purchases without it hurting my balance. The rant above was basically to highlight that I have all the time in the world as a medical student because I know when to study and when not to study, and this has allowed me to be able to work part-time and earn money.
