General surgery
It’s now my 5th week in general surgery and after having attended a laparoscopic hernia repair, I learnt a lot about the abdomen.
It is too long to explain them all BUT I’m going to tell you the names of the triangles (the structure formed by different anatomical entities) and then you can just google the names and learn what they are, what they consist of and why they are important.
These are important for your general surgery rotations so look them up and make sure you know them because you could get quizzed on it during ward rounds or a question might pop up during an exam.
The triangles
Calot’s triangle
Important for cholecystectomy
Hesselbach traingle
Important for inguinal hernia repair
The triangle of doom
Important to know during abdominal procedures - contains all major vessels and high risk of bleeding
The triangle of pain
The area where nerves to the thigh are located. Important as any damage there during surgery or during stapling can cause pain in the thigh of the patient.
These are just SOME of the triangles - to learn more about them, look them up.
What is important to know is what makes the BORDERS of each triangle and what is IN the triangle and why it is important to know these triangles.
