Obstetrics & Gynaecology
The OBGYN rotation so far has been very good. The doctors are super nice and very informative.
The huge difference between the wards and I am starting to now learn that not all wards are the same. In paediatrics, ward rounds would take 1 hour and everything was tedious. In OBGYN ward rounds take around 10 minutes in total. Not sure why this is the case, but hey, I'm not complaining.
Learnt how to find the fetus/baby with an ultrasound scan
I was at the antenatal clinic for 2 days and was taught by the resident how to scan the womb for the lie of the fetus, check the heart, get the weight, measure amniotic index.
Always start off by looking for the heart and confirm that there is a heartbeat. NO POINT in measuring the weight etc and making the parents happy only to then let them know that there is no heartbeat.
Measurements
Firstly you measure the head circumference
You then measure the abdomen. You find this by locating the umbilical vein and stomach.
You then measure the length of the femur. You locate the bladder and its the long bone right next to it. If you don't locate the bladder and find a long bone, you could end up measuring the humerus.
You then measure the amount of amniotic fluid to rule out oligohydramnios or polyhydramnios.
Got to put in my first cannula
Found a lovely anaesthetist who let me put in my first ever cannula. Luckily the patient’s veins were so clear and distinct, it was easy to do. Easier than a mannequin actually.
OBGYN surgeries are tough to look at
I'm not one to gag or feel unease at the sight of blood. However, the way the procedures are carried out through the cervix, with the amount of bodily fluids, blood - can be a sight to forget. I think it is safe to say that ob-gyn surgery is not for me.
