Hola everyone,
I had a whole newsletter written up to be sent out a few days ago but I got caught up with work and honestly, I can’t be bothered to finish it and proof read it for this weeks NL - so it will have to wait until next week.
For this week, I’ll keep it short and simple. Start being proactive!
Don’t expect people to do things for you and don’t expect doctors/nurses to come looking for you to teach you! Yes, sure! some may just come and do it but they are all busy and all have their own jobs. I keep saying this quote, I honestly think I made it up but I’m sure I’ll soon find out some famous philosopher once said it
Doctors and nurses and doctors and nurses first, teachers second.
So they are they obliged to teach you? yes, they’re getting paid, they are. I think they are at least? but are you their priority? No.
So bottom line, BE PROACTIVE.
You want to learn how to take bloods, GO TO THE NURSE OR JUNIOR DOCTOR and ASKKKK!!! You want to learn how to administer heparin injections subcutaneously? GO TO THE NURSE AND ASK! Be kind with your approach and smile and just ASK!
2 perfect examples from today:
I wanted to learn how to interpret urine output charts coz i suck at them. I went to a resident and asked! She said she will find me when she has time. Low and behold, 1 hour later, she comes into a room where I am preparing some drugs for a patient and grabs me to teach me.
I wanted to keep practising SC heparin injections, so I went to a nurse with a smile and asked and she straight away was like, one sec, she went and asked her colleagues as to who is doing the injections currently and straight away got me to do one! This also helps build rapport with the people you ask and the people you meet through the asking! I.e my rapport with this nurse and the nurse she told me to go to! Now I have 2 new friends. lol.
So yeah, be proactive and get shit done.
