The end of psychiatry:
I will keep this short because I have had a long day and I am currently getting over a headache.
I just completed my psychiatry rotation and I started off hating it a lot. Do not get me wrong, this sentence wasn’t going to end with me saying “but now I love it”. I hated psychiatry because I just never enjoyed the topics and I never really had any interest in it. However, in the last 3 weeks, I was with a certain doctor, psychologist and some nurses who made it all bearable. Their kindness and their enthusiasm towards psychiatry made me not hate every morning I got dressed to go to the hospital.
The doctor’s passion for this subject was obvious and it would project to me and it made me somewhat be interested in the conversations we had regarding psychiatric disorders which made it bearable. The psychologist’s kindness and enthusiasm every morning made the mornings better and certain nurses who always just seemed cheery made the rotations better. I don’t know how, but they just did.
What I am trying to say is that I HATED this rotation because of the subject, but because of the people in it, it became bearable and it wasn’t as bad. Moral of the story, and what I want you to take away from it is, even if you are ever in a rotation that you hate, there might be something tiny that makes it bearable, so you should hold on to that. In my case, it was the doctor’s passion mainly, therefore I would engage in conversation with him a lot to stay interested, rather than just sit there and be bored out of my mind. If your doctors are staff are horrible and you hate the rotation, then there isn’t much I can say about what to do.
